Rap is a genre that was born in the Bronx, New York in the early 1970s, and is notable for its use of drums, bass, synthesizers, and turntables. Early pioneers like DJ Kool Herc, Afrikaa Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash were inspired by the era’s hip-hip cultural movements, and rap grew immensely popular because of the platform it provided for underrepresented minorities. They paved the way for rappers like Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and many others. The genre created a sense of unity around the country, and evolved into genres like West coast hip-hop, rap rock, and jazz rap, and is often combined with other genres such as R&B. In the 1980s, old school rap emerged, and was better known for its simple and traditional beats, while new school rap became famous for its experimentation and rhymes.
Today, rap still remains popular due to the unity it fosters throughout the world. The genre’s leading artists include rappers like Eminem, 2pac, Jay-Z, Drake, and Kanye West. They have sold millions of albums, making them the most popular rappers of all time. While I do enjoy their music, I personally think Kendrick Lamar and Tyler, the Creator are some of the best artists in the genre. I love Kendrick Lamar’s “Die Hard,” “luther (with sza),” and “untitled 06 | 06.30.2014” among many others. J. Cole’s “Change” is also great, along with “Ex-Factor” by Ms. Lauryn Hill, “Touch the Sky” by Kanye West, and “Too Good” by Drake and Rihanna. All of these songs feature different beats and rhythms, so, while some may be more chill, others can get you hyped up and energetic. There are a plethora of different rappers and styles, so I recommend exploring the genre for a style you enjoy.
