This week I tested which brownies taste better, boxed mix or homemade. I will judge not only off taste, but also off price and the amount of time it takes to make.
The first brownies I made were the boxed ones. I used Betty Crocker Original Brownie Mix. The mix cost about $3 and you only need to add water, oil, and eggs. The batter came together really quickly and was super smooth. It only took 5 minutes to make the batter. I put them in a greased baking pan and baked for about 25 minutes. When the brownies were done, I put them out to cool for an hour. They tasted very good. The brownies were soft and gooey and had a buttery flavor. They didn’t have any weird taste and I would give them a 9/10.
The next brownie I made was the homemade one. I used the recipe from Love and Lemons. The recipe required sugar, flour, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, dark chocolate chips, eggs, oil, water, vanilla, and salt. The only thing that someone might have to buy is the cocoa powder and that costs about $7. The batter was very easy to make and took about 15 minutes. The batter was much thicker and grainier. I put it in an 8×8 pan with parchment paper. The instructions said to also grease the parchment paper. It was recommended to bake for 40-50 minutes. I put them in the oven for 40 minutes and let them cool for about 40 minutes. The brownies were very dense and chewy. The outside pieces were hard and felt overcooked. I put them in for the minimum amount of time recommended and they were still somehow overcooked. These brownies had a much richer taste because of the dark chocolate. They were still very good but not as good as the boxed mix ones. I give them an 8/10.
Overall, the boxed ones were better. The boxed mix cost less than the cocoa powder and the homemade ones come out less soft and gooey. If you like a denser brownie, then I would recommend taking the extra time to make the homemade ones. But if you prefer a softer brownie, or just want a quick snack that is simpler to make, then go with the boxed ones.
