Hit or Miss: Tankinis

Tankini

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, tankinis—a chic take on swimwear—became popular as a useful and elegant substitute for bikinis and one-piece swimsuits. The tankini offers more coverage than a standard bikini while preserving mobility by fusing the ease of a bikini bottom with the coverage of a tank top. Though the exact reason for the rise of tankinis is unknown, most people agree that women’s need for more versatile and covered swimwear led to the creation of the tankini. Designers started playing around with various looks, fusing parts of bikinis and tank tops to produce the hybrid clothing that came to be known as the tankini. Due to their versatile fit and attractive form, tankinis immediately became popular on a variety of body types. They allowed you to mix and match different bottoms while maintaining the coverage of a one-piece swimsuit. Tankinis are a mainstay of many swimwear collections these days, coming in a range of designs, hues, and patterns to accommodate personal preferences.

Are Tankinis a hit or a miss? Tankinis are definitely a miss. This style of bathing suit is mostly meant for kids. Although they are versatile and had their popularity in the 2000s, they are not a fashion statement nor should ever be again. In the 2000s they were a hit because of the movie H2O where the mermaids wore tankinis. However, that was twenty years ago, and this trend should stay in its grave. They are childish and tacky. This fashion statement is not a positive one and definitely a miss.

If you still insist on trying out the tankini, you can still find them at Justice.
