This week I tested which cookies tasted better, boxed mix or homemade. I will judge not only off of taste, but also based off price and the amount of time it takes to make.
The first cookies I made were the boxed mix ones. I used Betty Crocker’s chocolate chip cookie mix. It costed 2.99 for the mix and all you needed to add was butter and an egg. The dough came together really quickly and only took about 5 minutes. I had to bake it for 12 minutes and the cookies came out at a good size. They came out a lot flatter than the homemade ones and also looked more yellow. The taste wasn’t bad. They were very buttery, but had a slight chemical taste. I would give them a 7/10 because they don’t take long to make and are cheap.
The next cookie I made was from scratch. The recipe included flour, baking soda, baking powder, butter, sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, eggs, salt and chocolate chips. If you didn’t already have all the ingredients at home, it would cost more, overall about $… per batch. Making the dough took about 10 minutes and I baked them for about 12 minutes. The cookies came out puffier and not as yellow as the boxed cookies. The taste was noticeably better than the boxed cookies. They didn’t have the chemical taste the other ones had, and were much fresher. I give the homemade cookies an 8/10 because they tasted better than the boxed ones and were fresher, but did take more time and cost a little more to make.
Over all I think it’s worth the few extra minutes to make your own cookies. The results come out way tastier and fresher. The boxed ones aren’t bad of you are in a time crunch or don’t want to spend as much.
