I sat down with SJN band member Tebow Morris to learn more about the upcoming Christmas Band Performance. Here’s what he had to say.
Can you tell us about the upcoming band performances?
So basically, the band performance will be held at St. John Neumann, in the SLC, where we’re going to be going through multiple pieces of music. I totally recommend going to support the band, you won’t regret coming to watch. I also don’t wanna say too much or I’ll spoil it.
What is the band doing to prepare?
To prepare, the band makes sure to focus hard on their pieces. Every band class we tune our instruments and sit down to play each piece separately. We sometimes break down our parts and we always make sure they are perfected by the end.
Can you give us a clue/clues about the pieces that will be played?
I don’t want to give away too much, but I’ll do my best to give a little clue. Here’s the clue. One of the songs is known for being one of the best-known Christmas songs ever. It’s been playing for years, and was first played in 1994.
Do you have any pre-performance rituals that help you prepare?
It may sound stupid, but honestly just taking a breath and looking over my piece and telling myself that I can do it usually helps. Having self-confidence can be a real good boost that helps me stay focused in the moment and helps me prepare.
What do you hope the audience takes away from your performance?
I hope to blow away the audience. The pieces that the band and I are doing are sure to make everyone smile, not just because they are recognizable songs but because the way that every single person in the band plays a part in making music. We as a whole make music live up to its name.
Can you share any memorable rehearsal moments?
This may sound cheesy, but to me all of my rehearsals are memorable. I don’t think I’ve ever walked out of band class without learning something new, whether it was something about the music or something about us as a band.
You can see the Band Perform on December 11th in the SLC. Come out to support the SJN band and get in the Holiday spirit!
