Neumann has almost always had some sort of Art Club, yet, they seem to disappear as those who run it graduate. Fortunately, student Olivia Gallagher and her friends have made it their mission to bring Art Club back to St. John Neumann.
Q: What was your inspiration for starting an art club?
Well, Neumann has previously had art clubs, but they were always run by different people or different students. Most of the time when those students graduated the art club would just end there, so with the help of some others we brought it back.
Q: When does the art club meet?
Right now, it’s only the first and third Thursdays of the month. Hopefully we can make it every Thursday soon. It really depends on how many people there are. Our meetings are really scattered because most of our members have really busy schedules, including sports and other stuff.
Q: What do you hope to accomplish through our art club?
Two lessons ago we did clay and life drawings. I also really hope to do a lot of open projects and more sculpting.
Q: How do you think an art club will help its own members long-term?
There aren’t too many opportunities right now at Neumann, so I wanted to provide an actual art, education and fundamentals course for other students like me. I hope it expands other students’ horizons.
Q: How do you think our club will benefit the school or other clubs?
We’re going to try and expand two more parts of the school, so if other clubs need posters or banners so we are here to help. I hope to figure out how to get art scholarships for some of the members as well.
Q: How do you think art will help yourself long-term?
I am actually hoping to graduate and go to college for art. I would like to study animation. I’m really looking forward to going, most likely, to the Savannah College of Art and design.
Q: What are some fundamentals that the club is learning currently?
A few weeks ago, we started teaching lunch form and some perspective. But now we have more members and we’re moving onto more clay projects and life drawing, also simple things such as teaching them how to use references and draw something as perceived. I just really hope to break up learning and education with some fun projects.
Art Clubs have come in waves at Neumann. Hopefully this one is here to stay. Art Club has a new beginning thanks to Olivia Gallagher and her friends. They hope to teach other students about the key aspects of art. The club also hopes to become active in the school helping in any way they can. This new Art Club provides members with projects, learning and maybe even more opportunities to come here at St. John Neumann
