On Monday, Sept. 16, our Celtic students flocked to the SJN gymnasium for the annual college fair. 48 college representatives from all around the country set up tables with information and resources to allow students to learn more about their options for life after Neumann. For an hour, students were able to ask questions, have conversations with the representatives, and plan for their futures.
Colleges like the University of Florida, University of Miami, Florida State University, Michigan State University, University of Alabama, and the University of Notre Dame, along with military academies such as the United States Coast Guard Academy, the United States Military Academy at West Point, and USAF Academy & USAF ROTC were present at this year’s college fair. A good mix of both private and public universities attended, with the bulk of them being located in Florida. The representatives handed out pamphlets with details describing what majors, minors, extracurriculars, and scholarships are available. Some colleges additionally handed out fun items like stickers and pens to get students involved.
Student attitudes toward the fair were neutral overall. Sophomore Tebow Morris said, “It was alright. It wasn’t something I was actually excited to attend. They gave good information, but honestly it was a bit overwhelming.” Nathaly Ramos, a junior at Neumann, said “It was ok. It was pretty chaotic because of the amount of new students, but it’s very helpful in terms of figuring out and understanding more about colleges/universities I may or may not want to attend.” Many really enjoyed it, and felt that it was awesome to have so many colleges in the same spot with solid amount information available. Personally, I agree with Ramos’s and Morris’s statements. As a senior at SJN, I’ve been to my fair share of college fairs, and this one was average. I was expecting to receive more information about out-of-state schools, but I have to admit that this year’s selection was still great. The majority of students found it informative.
This year’s Neumann college fair was generally a success. The plethora of college representatives that attended were able to spark interest in many students. Celtic students left the gym that day with a handful of pamphlets and valuable knowledge.
